FLASHBACK: One Year Ago Today - Cookeville Hits 106°

Going into June 29 of last year, we knew it was going to be a very hot day. A dry air mass with stifling daytime heat had set-up over the area. The interesting thing is that the morning low was around 65° at 5 am. Just 12 hours later, the mercury would climb more than 40° topping out at 106° measured by my Northeast Cookeville weather station. The official high was 105° tying the all-time record set back in 1930.

The map of highs from June 29

One year later, we expect highs only in the lower 80's today with upper 70's on Sunday. Quite a chance from 1 year ago today, don't you think?

This Time Last Year

Does anyone remember late June last year?
If not, let me remind you.

June was a fairly hot month up to June 27 with 10 days that hit 90° plus including 8 straight days from the 18th through the 25th. We dipped down to 84° on the 26th but rebounded to 93° on the 27th.

From June 28th on the high temps were as follows:
102° on June 28
106° on June 29
105° on June 30
104° on July 1

We would snap the 100° plus streak on July 2, 3, and 4th with highs 'only' reaching 97°, 98°, and 98° respectively but then hit 100° for three straight days and 101° on July 8.

Strangely enough, July 10 was just 79° while July 12 was just 74° for high temps.

During that hot streak, we managed to be at 97° or above for 9 straight days.

I do not believe we'll see those kind of temps over the next 10 day period, but rest assured we have some hot weather still to come this summer.

Thunderstorms Likely Overnight

We're watching the possibility of thunderstorms later tonight.

Counties just to our north in the commonwealth of Kentucky are under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch. Here in the Cookeville area, our forecast is for a 70% chance for thunderstorms after 10 pm with the most likely chance in the early morning hours of Thursday. Some thunderstorms do have the possibility of reaching the strong to severe limits but at this point, chances aren't very high of this happening.

For Thursday through next week, we'll have a chance of thunderstorms each day with the best chances (other than tonight) coming on Friday. Temperatures will moderate a bit back down into the lower 80's this weekend and the start of next week.

The weekend forecast calls for daytime high temperatures in the upper 80's and lows in the mid to upper 60's. There is a slight rain chance on Sunday.

Good Changes In The Forecast

If there is good news from a tropical storm system, we've gotten it.

Originally, we were looking at some pretty significant rains through the weekend, but chances have decreased dramatically and we will have a fantastic weekend with the best day being Saturday with highs in the upper 70's to around 80°. Only a slight chance for thunderstorms on Sunday with highs in the mid 80's.

I do think we'll have a slight chance for rain on Friday with an occasional thunderstorm but it won't be an all-day rain out.

We see rain chances each day starting next week but they aren't that great (for now).

Updated Severe Potential This Weekend

Welcome to the first week of June.

The month of May was quite exciting with a bunch of rainfall (with 5-6" amounts common in the area and 3+ inches during May 4-5), warm weather (high of  May 20-21), and chilly weather (lows in the mid 30's on the 13th) . Just another typical month of Tennessee weather in the spring time of the year.

We are watching a potentially developing situation for later tonight and early Sunday across the Upper Cumberland. There is the potential for strong to severe storms with large, damaging hail, strong winds, and heavy rainfall with frequent lightning in the region. The main threat will be from damaging straight-line winds. Localized flooding will be possible in the areas that receive the heaviest rainfall.

The greatest potential for storms today (Saturday) will be back to our west near the Tennessee River area.

Our main threat will be during the overnight hours of Saturday night and sunrise on Sunday although we may see some heavier showers and thunderstorms develop this afternoon during the heat of the day and continue after the strongest line comes through on Sunday morning.

The upcoming week will feature a variety of weather including sunshine, a chance for storms and highs mainly in the 80's.
